CUSTOMIZING > SETTING HEART RATE ZONES
Setting Heart Rate Zones
A heart rate zone is simply a certain range of beats per
minute. Heart rate zones are generally based on a percentage
of your maximum heart rate and are numbered from 1 to 5
based on intensity (1–lowest, 5–highest).
About AutoLearn™
For each sport, the Forerunner 301 contains a set of default
heart rate zones, which may not reflect your heart rate
zones accurately. Consequently, the Forerunner employs
an extremely valuable feature called AutoLearn, which can
automatically determine your heart rate zones over a period
of time and calculate your maximum heart rate.
Using AutoLearn
AutoLearn is turned on by default in Running mode, so the
Forerunner begins gathering data to calculate your heart rate
zones from your very first workout—no setup or calibration
required.
When the Forerunner gathers enough data to calculate new
heart rate zones, a message appears on the Welcome screen
immediately after you turn it on. Thereafter, the Forerunner
continues to gather data and adjust your heart rate zones
to reflect your current fitness level. If the zone changes are
large (3 bpm), a message appears when you turn on the
Forerunner; otherwise, you will receive no notification.
Each time the Forerunner modifies your
heart rate zones significantly, a message
appears when you turn on the Forerunner.
Other things to know about AutoLearn:
To calculate your heart rate zones using AutoLearn,
you must spend some time training above your
lactate threshold. See the Appendix for more
information.
Calculating your heart rate zones may take one
workout or several, depending on the intensity of
